From Karak to Controlling the Skies

The Inspiring Journey of Sri Murugan Centre (SMC) Alumnus Mr. Perumal Subramaniam Sri Murugan Centre proudly celebrates the remarkable journey of Mr. Perumal Subramaniam, an accomplished Air Traffic Controller (ATC) and Manager (MM8) at the Kuala Lumpur Air Traffic Control Centre (KLATCC), Sepang. His story reflects the power of perseverance, discipline, and the strong foundation built during his formative years at SMC. Growing up in a humble household in Karak as the fourth of five siblings, Perumal’s father worked as a rubber estate supervisor while his mother toiled as a rubber tapper. With limited financial resources, private tuition was never an option. For him, SMC was the guiding light—providing weekly motivation, structured learning, and the academic discipline he needed to thrive. Between 1992 and 1998, his time at SMC Karak was marked by continuous guidance, mock examinations, and an environment that nurtured resilience. He excelled in the SMC mock exam, becoming one of the top scorers. Among the many experiences, he fondly recalls the Kalvi Yathirai, which instilled in him spiritual strength and inner discipline. The greatest lesson he carries forward to this day is one deeply ingrained at SMC: punctuality and 100% commitment in whatever we do. Today, Perumal stands as a trailblazer in his field. He is the only Air Traffic Controller in Malaysia entrusted to conduct the Fatigue Risk Management Course—a critical program ensuring aviation safety. Since 2021, he has led more than 20 sessions and trained nearly 500 ATC personnel across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, South America, and the Caribbean. His contribution has elevated Malaysia’s reputation in global aviation training and safety standards. Perumal’s journey from a modest upbringing in Karak to becoming a respected authority in air traffic control is a powerful reminder of how determination, discipline, and strong values can shape one’s destiny. His achievements reflect not only his personal dedication but also the lasting impact of SMC’s mission to nurture excellence in every student.
